We are standing twenty centimetres apart. My heart is beating fast, weakness settling into my knees. I lean in closer just a little bit and suddenly his arms embrace me gently. A warm tingle spreads wherever his hands and arms touch me. Nothing ever felt as right as this.

I kiss the tip of his nose slowly — like I told him I would — and watching his eyes close so tenderly at the touch of my lips makes me want to kiss his eyelids too. Seconds later, when his dark eyes stare back at me again, I can’t help but smile. Is this what happiness is all about?

I let my eyes close, but his gaze lingers on me. Studying my face and memorizing where all my freckles are. Like a whisper, he mumbles, “keep your eyes closed. Trust me.”

My hand runs up his arm as I squeeze it softly, almost in desperation. I want this. I want him. The gap between us is gone. We’re so close I can hear his breathing… Quietly, a bit erratic, and warm against my mouth. And then his lips touch mine. The kiss is not hard or rushed. Actually, his lips barely brush against mine. The touch is so light, it sends goosebumps across my skin. It’s not just another kiss. It’s the kiss you wait for your whole life.

All of a sudden, we’re not two people anymore. We’re together. We’re us. And nothing else in the world ever felt as incredible as knowing he felt the same way all along.
